Re-decorating with the Seasons: A Guide to Seasonal Interior Design

Switching up your home decor with the seasons is a great way to keep things feeling fresh.

A few small tweaks here and there throughout the year can help you create a warm and welcoming space that captures the essence of each season. Whether you're adding a burst of colour with spring flowers or layering on the cozy vibes for winter, here are some tips and ideas to help you easily update your home decor as the seasons change.

Before you start

  • If you have (or purchase) furniture and large decor pieces in neutral colours, your overall look can be especially easy to update with seasonal accents.

  • Invest in versatile pieces like slipcovers, interchangeable pillow covers and multi-purpose furniture. Buying these in different colours can give an easy and instant update to your home.

  • Invest in storage solutions like bins, baskets and shelves to keep seasonal decor organised throughout the year, as well as easily accessible. Clearly label storage containers to make finding seasonal items easier.

  • Look for reusable decor items rather than disposable ones to reduce waste. Explore op-shops and markets for unique, budget-friendly decor pieces. You never know what unique, standout pieces you’ll find!

  • Refresh your wall with an art piece to reflect the season… like this piece in the image below called “EXOTIC BOTANICALS VIII” – Natural Canvas from Home By Essencia online store. See more of our exciting art collection HERE.

SPRING: Fresh and Vibrant

Spring is a time of renewal and growth, making it the perfect season to refresh your home with light, bright and cheerful elements.

Textiles and Decor

Think soft blues, greens, yellows and pinks. And consider adding some bright accents such as fresh greens. Swap heavy winter fabrics for lightweight cotton and linen. Bring in floral patterns for cushions, throws and rugs. Display fresh flowers like tulips, daffodils and hyacinths. Incorporate potted plants and greenery or refresh what you already have displayed. Wreaths and Garlands are a fresh way to also bring in more from the outdoors… hang spring-themed wreaths on doors and hang garlands in living areas.

Tips

The end of winter, when the sun is shining more confidently and the blossoms are coming out, is the perfect time to clear out any clutter that has accumulated over the winter. Bring in that airy, open feel! Rearrange furniture to make use of more natural light and improve the flow of your space.

Summer: Bright and Airy

Summer decor should capture the essence of warm, sunny days and breezy evenings. Focus on creating a relaxed, beach-like vibe.

Textiles and Decor

Think blues, whites and sandy neutrals. Consider using colours like yellow, coral and turquoise accents to give bright pops of colour. Use light, breathable, cool fabrics like cotton and linen for bedding and upholstery. Incorporate indoor and outdoor rugs that can withstand summer traffic, if you are considering rugs. Decorate with seashells, driftwood and pinecones to bring in a holiday feel.

Here in Australia, December is the festive Christmas season… so pinecones are a natural addition - along with your Christmas tree and decor, of course!

Tips

Embrace a minimalist approach to keep your home feeling open and uncluttered. Take the time to extend your living space by enhancing your outdoor living area. Incorporate comfortable seating, lanterns and string lights.

Autumn: Warm and Cozy

Orange and browns to create earthy look.

Autumn decorating is all about warmth, comfort and the rich colors of the harvest season. Focus on creating a welcoming, cosy atmosphere that will work with the cooler days that are creeping in.

Textiles and Decor

Embrace earthy tones like rich browns, deep oranges, golden yellows and warm reds. Muted neutrals can also work well - such as beige, taupe and soft greys. Introduce heavier, warmer fabrics like wool and flannelette. And velvet for blankets, pillows, and curtains. Consider plaid and check patterns for a classic Autumn look. Decorate with beautiful autumn leaves, acorns and branches. Whether or not you are into Halloween, displaying pumpkins and gourds can also represent the harvest season. Use candles and lanterns to create a warm, inviting glow in the chilly evenings.

Tips

Layer rugs, throws and pillows to add texture and warmth. Keep lightweight throws accessible for those evenings.

Winter: Warm and Festive

Soft and fluffy blankets and throws

The cold winter season can be appreciated with warmth and comfort. Focus on creating a cosy retreat from the cold. By creating this, your welcoming space will be inviting for family and friends to spend time connecting in. There’s nothing better than chatting, games and hot drinks together on those cold wintery days!

Textiles and Decor

While there’s no hard and fast rule, I’d suggest icy blues, whites and silvers - or a neutral palette. And I’d suggest adding dark accent pieces, such as a deep green or navy blue cushions, to create a sense of depth and cosiness. Use thicker, heavier plush fabrics like faux fur, wool and knit for blankets and pillows. Swap out lighter rugs for those with thicker, plush textures. A wool or shaggy rug can make your space feel warmer and more intimate, especially if you have wood floors. Use string lights and candles to keep that warm glow in the evenings. Using scented candles can bring in winter fragrances like pine, cinnamon and vanilla. Bring the outdoors in with evergreen branches, eucalyptus or pinecones. These can be arranged in vases or used as garlands to add a natural, wintery feel to your home.

Tips

Create cosy nooks with comfortable seating, soft blankets and plenty of pillows. Incorporate indoor plants that will thrive in low-light conditions such as ferns or succulents.
